Flemish Landfill: Before and after
Anyone who currently visits Flemish Landfill would not imagine that the place has already undergone a series of renovations and revisions. In the section currently occupied by Parque Brigadeiro Eduardo Gomes, the original shoreline had a jagged shape, with small coves here and there, like Praia do Russel.
The first earthworks in the region date back to the beginning of the 20th century, when Avenida Beira-Mar, Praça Paris and Avenida da Praia do Flamengo were built. Later, the area was occupied by the Museum of Modern Art and the Monument to the Dead of the Second World War.
Years later, the main part of the embankment was built, forming, from the tip of Calabouço to Morro da Viúva, a long sandbank of stones arranged to form a lagoon and the strip of sand on Flamengo beach which, then, was grounded.
The original plan called for the construction of express lanes between the Center and the South Zone of the city. However, the idea of creating a large park in the area, next to the carriageways, is attributed to landscaper Carlota de Macedo Soares.
With the landscape design by Roberto Burle Marx, the new park was destined for sporting activities, receiving several courts for sports.
